All of our Birth Doulas were trained by Kathy McGrath, MSW, LSW, FACCE, CD (DONA). Kathy is a childbirth educator, birth counselor and practicing doula. She is a certified doula, doula trainer and doula mentor (only one of two designated by DONA to do so). She is a consultant to a number of local and national agencies, including East Liberty Family Health Care Center, EveryChild, Maternity Center Association and a number of hospitals. Kathy is a popular speaker, locally and nationally, on issues related to psychological aspects of childbearing. She is on the faculty and Certification Council of Lamaze International, faculty of the University of Pittsburgh’s Childbirth Education Program and on the Education Committee for DONA. She has several published articles on birth and parenting and has been a regular columnist for iVillage. Kathy and her husband are the parents of three children.
Our Birth Doulas are also certified through DONA. DONA is the acronym for Doulas of North America, an international association of doulas who are trained to provide the highest quality emotional, physical and educational support to women and their families during childbirth and postpartum. DONA is the premier doula organization founded by Marshall Klaus MD, Phyllis Klaus, John Kennell MD, Penny Simkin and Annie Kennedy in 1992. Evidence based certification programs are offered for both birth doulas and postpartum doulas.
Membership in DONA includes over 5,000 birth and postpartum doulas.
